Health and well-being
How well we live in retirement isn’t solely dependent on our finances. Our well-being is at least as important, if not more so than our financial status. It’s well known that people are living longer in retirement, but what value is longevity if you don’t feel well enough to enjoy it?
Take control of your well-being in your younger years. Establish preventative measures now to maximise your chances of living well in retirement, such as:
- exercise;
- regular medical check-ups;
- keeping your weight within a healthy range;
- eating a wide variety of fresh produce;
- quit smoking;
- drinking alcohol moderately;
- reducing stress (where possible);
- looking after your mental well-being; and
- maintaining a positive outlook on life.
Many retirees feel happier and less isolated when they maintain social and community networks.
This could involve doing volunteer work at the local hospital, joining a sporting club or becoming actively involved in a church group. Other retirees keep their minds active by attending adult education classes or taking computer courses.
